Light Hearted Banter?

I am so gay!! Yes i can say that because i am attracted to men and therefore am gay. The rather recent trend of labelling anything that is broken, rubbish, effeminate or tacky as "gay" is getting out of control. Chris Moyles, Rio Ferdinand and even the darlings of the gay scene Take That have been in the media recently for using the word "gay" as a slur, Rio Ferdinand went a step further and used the word "faggot" live on radio 1 - of course complaints were made and here is what the BBC said about the Rio Ferdinand incident

"We sincerely apologise for the inappropriate comment that was made during some light-hearted banter between Chris Moyles and Rio Ferdinand on 2October"

An institution as powerful as the BBC has a real opportunity to stand up for diversity, equality and gay rights but instead keeps releasing these pissy little statements that mean nothing.

I do a lot of work with young people and schools and the term "gay" is used in an offensive way more than any other insult. Top marks to the BBC for letting the children and young people of today think that is acceptable. I pity the young gay men trying to get an education these days when their days are marred by constant negative remarks about a sexuality that they have yet to come to terms with.

The usual response when people are challenged about their use of the word "gay" will be that they dont mean it like that, its just a saying! Well if it offends me its not just a saying - its offensive and i am not the only one who is offended by it. If people could be a little bit more imaginative and educated with their terminology i would be a very happy man.

Next time you hear someone use the word "gay" in a negative way, try challenging them, dont just stand there and let their oxygen thieving ignorance get the better of you.

Right folks i am going to hop off the soapbox and tomorrow will be back to being superficial and dizzy

xx
